Capricorn Astrology - The name Capricornus or Capricorn is usually translated as "the sea goat" or "the goat fish".
Capricorn is a southern constellation between Sagittarius and Aquarius, and resembles the outlining of a goat. Capricorn Constellation was known as The Southern Gate of the Sun, because in this constellation the Sun reaches its lowest point on the ecliptic.
Capricorn is the tenth sign of the Zodiac, which the Sun enters on or about December 22nd.
In Greek mythology, Zeus battled Typhon, the God of Darkness, or the Evil God, but in the first encounter Zeus was defeated.
The monstrous Typhon cut out the tendons of Zeus' hands and feet, to make him unable to move. He then hid the tendons in a cave and put as a guard at the cave entrances, the dragon Delphyne, half-serpent and half-woman.
Delphyne was not a very good guard, and while she was sleeping, the tendons were stolen by the Gods Hermes and Aegipan.
Aegipan, like all other Gods frightened by the monstruos Typhon, rushed to transform himself into an animal to escape his detection.
As Typhon saw him and was approaching fast, Aegipan jumped into the river.
He was already halfway submerged before he thought of what form of animal he could change into. He decided in the last moment to be a goat. So, he transformed himself into a goat, but only from the waist up. From the waist down he took the form of a fish, as his body was still in the water.
Aegipan and Hermes returned the tendons to Zeus, giving him his strength back. Zeus unleashed all his fury and killed the monster Typhon by hurling thunderbolts at him.
For Aegipans role in this battle against the monstruos Typhon, Zeus gave him an honored place in the sky as the Constellation Capricorn.
