Sagittarius Astrology - Sagittarius is Latin for "archer". Sagittarius symbol is a stylized arrow, and the common representation of Sagittarius zodiac sign is a centaur drawing a bow.
Sagittarius or Centaurus is the constellation of the Zodiac that contains the galactic center. The arrow of this constellation points towards the star Antares, the "heart of the scorpion."
In Greek mythology, Sagittarius is identified as the centaur Chiron, the first among centauries, a highly respected teacher and tutor.
Half human and half horse, centaurs were notorious for being wild and lusty, overly indulgent drinkers, violent when intoxicated, and generally uncultured delinquents.
Chiron, by contrast, was intelligent, civilized and kind. He was known for his vast knowledge in medicine. He was a great healer, a wise astrolger and a respectable oracle.
His nobility is reflected in the story of his death, as Chiron sacrificed his life, allowing mankind to obtain the use of fire.
The myth connects Chiron's supreme sacrifice with the story of Prometheus, who stole the fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals. Prometheus was punished by Zeus, who bound him to a rock while a great eagle ate his liver every day only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day.
The legend says that while in a battle, Chiron had been poisoned by mistake with an arrow belonging to Hercules. That arrow had been treated with the dealdly poisonous blood of the Hydra.
Despite the fact that Chiros was immortal, as his father was Cronos, and he was the master of the healing arts, he could not heal himself. He willingly gave up his immortality in exchange for the life of Prometheus.
Chiron was honored by Zeus with a place in the sky, as the Constellation Sagittarius or Centaurus, where it shines to this day.
